Statement on Racial Injustice and Violence

We at WTS Toronto Area Chapter are heartbroken by the recent tragic killings and the loss of life as a result of racial injustice and senseless violence. As Canada, the United States and the world responds with empathy and outrage, WTS Toronto recognizes the acute discrimination and hardship experienced by the Black and Indigenous communities due to ongoing systemic racial inequality.

WTS Toronto aims to be clear about our goals and profound obligation on being a part of the solution to eliminate racial inequality through our work of making transportation more equitable and accessible. As an organization devoted to the professional development of women, we challenge ourselves to expand opportunities for training on both conscious and unconscious bias in our leadership courses, with Board and Chapter leaders, and amongst WTS staff to ensure we are building a welcoming, inclusive, diverse and dynamic space for all people, especially Black and Indigenous Canadians.

WTS Toronto members advocate for equity and access every day in the workplace, communities, and industry, to modernize transportation systems, eliminate bias in the workforce, combat environmental injustice, and expand opportunities through transportation for residents and citizens in our society. Our organization understands the power of holding uncomfortable conversations in the pursuit of equity and stands committed to furthering this dialogue with members of the Black and Indigenous communities, Chapter members, sponsors, local leaders, and industry allies.

The WTS Toronto Area Chapter is committed to keeping these issues at the centre of our conversations, implementing actionable strategies, and expanding opportunities for training ourselves and our industry. We will continue to listen, use our voice and be part of the solution that leads to a profound, positive change!
