Transportation YOU Engagement Events
The South Carolina Transportation YOU program is just getting started, but our team has been actively engaging with STEM events and other meaningful opportunities for middle school and high school girls across the state.
Girl Scouts of South Carolina - Mountains to Midlands STEM Expo 2026
The Girl Scouts of South Carolina - Mountains to Midlands hosted a STEM Expo at the Saluda Shoals River Center. The event provided an opportunity for young women to learn about careers and projects in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) sectors. The Girl Scouts invited several organizations to host educational booths and interactive activities. The WTS SC Chapter hosted a booth at the event and provided a handout about the many careers in transportation. We talked about what we do at our jobs and handed out Transportation Word Find puzzles, WTS SC pens, color changing pencils, and candy!
2026 ASCE Upstate 4th Grade Bridge Event
The event is open to all 4th grade students in Greenville County School District who are part of the Challenge program. They complete a study on engineering, loads, and bridges, and then get into groups of four to design and build their own bridge made of popsicle sticks and glue. At the main event, over 350 bridges are loaded with up to 100 pounds of weight. The most structurally efficient bridge wins!! WTS SC was a sponsor of the event and also had an activity table. We provided a handout about the many careers in transportation, talked about what we do at our jobs, tested bridges made out of paper, and gave away a 4-pack of tickets to a Greenville Drive game + merch! We also handed out Transportation Word Find puzzles, WTS SC pens, color changing pencils, balsa wood gliders, and lots of candy.
Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day
Tuesday, February 24, 2026, was declared “Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day” by the South Carolina House of Representatives in Bill 5051. This resolution aims to encourage girls ages K-8 to explore STEM and Engineering careers early through hands-on activities, mentorship, and job shadowing. Engineering is vital to our state’s economy and resident’s quality of life and WTS SC is excited to see how students, families, engineers, and educators will get involved with this special day in all the years to come. An event will be held each year at the SC State House for female students to participate and meet their legislators in partnership with WTS SC Chapter as well as other local professional organizations such as ACEC-SC, NSPE-SC, and the Society of Women Engineers.
