 HELENE OVERLY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Sage Weatherwax

is a second-year graduate student in the city and regional planning graduate program at UNC-Chapel Hill specializing in transportation. She first became interested in transportation after seeing how the transportation network connects people and places to one another. How it shapes daily lives, as well as varies depending on location. As a graduate student, she has worked as a research assistant with the UNC Highway Safety Research Center, where she investigated multimodal transportation policies and vision zero initiatives around the world as well as helped coordinate events such as Bike and Roll to School Day and collected crosswalk data in the field. Sage was also named a 2024 Eisenhower fellow for her research on Mode Shift Along the Piedmont Region and served as the vice president of external affairs for the 2024 UNC-CH ITE chapter. Upon graduation, she hopes to work in a position to address ever-changing needs of citizens, find solutions that improve quality of life and ensure equitable and sustainable development in the future.

Annie Oommen headshot

Annie Oommen

is a second year City and Regional Planning Master’s student at UNC-Chapel Hill. A proud double tarheel, she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Public Policy from Carolina in 2020. Since then, she has taught English in Nantes, France and worked in health policy in Washington, D.C. Now, she seeks to connect communities and right historical wrongs through sustainable and equitable transportation planning efforts.

Rebecca Cox

is a Master of Environmental Management student at Duke University. As a tall ship sailor, she aspires to reduce the environmental impacts of the maritime industry. With interests in marine megafauna conservation, she plans to use her skills in geospatial analysis to track the movements of whales and seabirds to prevent ship strikes.

Lily Sharon headshot

Lily Sharon

is a senior at Cardinal Gibbons High School in Raleigh, NC, where she maintains a 4.5 GPA and a strong passion for engineering and leadership. This fall,, she will attend NC State University’s College of Engineering to pursue a degree in civil engineering. An active leader in her school and community, Lily has competed on the high school varsity swim team and as a year-round club swimmer, served on the Leadership Council, worked as a peer tutor, and is a member of the National Honor Society. Since May 2024, she has also been gaining hands-on experience as a high school intern with the North Carolina Department of Transportation, further deepening her interest in transportation and infrastructure.

Susan McGraw headshot

Susan McGraw

is graduating this year from Athens Drive Magnet High School, where she has been part of the STEM Academy and has held several leadership positions, including Student Body President, Women’s Varsity Golf Team Captain, National Honor Society Board Member, and Head Junior Marshal. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with friends, golfing, reading, and cheering on her teams at athletic events. This past summer, she had the opportunity to intern with NCDOT’s Division of Aviation, gaining invaluable experience. Looking ahead, Susan is excited to pursue Civil Engineering at N.C. State University and is eager to make a positive impact on transportation.
