As a Transportation Planning Intern at NMCOG, you will get hands-on experience with regional transportation planning, from collecting data in the field to turning it into findings that shape real projects. Working alongside NMCOG’s transportation staff, you’ll support Complete Streets, safety, transit, and corridor planning in the region’s nine communities. You’ll gather counts and field data on people walking, biking, and parking, audit sidewalks, crosswalks, and bus stops, and help analyze and present what you find. This role is a good fit for someone who is curious about how streets work, enjoys being out in the community, and wants to see how data and planning shape everyday decisions in local government.

1DOT Internship Program (Pathways), Volpe Center

This internship is part of the Department of Transportation's 1DOT Pathways Internship Program, expected to begin May 30, 2027. This is a temporary internship with a possibility of extension throughout the academic year provided the employee remains eligible for employment in the Pathways Intern Program. Positioned across the Department of Transportation (DOT), interns collaborate with professional engineers, analysts, economists, financial experts, human resources, and more professionals to advance national transportation initiatives. Participants actively coordinate in professional operations, gaining firsthand exposure to how engineering, business and policy, Information Technology (IT), Mathematics, finance, safety, or human capital intersect to sustain and modernize the nation's transportation systems. The Deputy Director ensures Authority-wide standards for operating rules governance, document management, and systems integration; directs complex cross-functional initiatives; and ensures operating rules are effectively developed, maintained, communicated, and integrated across Operations. The position is accountable for maintaining the integrity, accessibility, consistency, and regulatory compliance of the Authority's operating rules framework while supporting long-term modernization and organizational readiness.
