Our Student Outreach chapter is made up of sub-committees with a focus on stimulating interest in transportation-related careers amongst students from elementary to college. One of those sub-committees is TransportationYou. TransportationYou (TrYou) is responsible for developing and implementing the Chapter’s Transportation You program which is designed to introduce girls between the ages of 13-18 to careers in transportation. TrYou is currently looking for volunteers, check out the section below for details on volunteering!

Are you passionate about inspiring the next generation of women in transportation? The TrYOU program is seeking mentors for our high school mentoring initiative, which empowers young women to explore careers in engineering, planning, architecture, and other transportation-related fields. As a mentor, you’ll travel within Greater Philadelphia to attend outreach events during the school year and participate in mentor meetings to plan various events. This is a rewarding opportunity to make a lasting impact by mentoring the next generation of leaders while also making connections with your peers in the transportation industry.

Mentor Responsibilities per school year*:

  • Attend 3 in-person outreach events in the Greater Philadelphia area
  • Attend 2 in-person mentor meetings in the City of Philadelphia
  • Be able to work in small groups with elementary, middle, and high school-aged girls on transportation and engineering-related activities
  • Have an open mind!

*Please note the school year runs from September to June. Events typically will require about 2-3 hours of volunteer time during the school day or Saturday mornings.

“In a male-dominated field lacking in female peers and role models, organizations and events such as TrYOU and the Capital Summit make a major difference in a young woman feeling capable and supported. Having the chance to now help lead a program that I was once a mentee in is a unique opportunity for me to be that role model for students who find themselves in a situation similar to myself not all that long ago. I hope to replicate the safe space and like-minded community for pursuing your goals that was created for me through the dedication of time by others," said Madelyn Marquardt.
