TrYOU Event with Congreso

Last month, Transportation YOU worked in partnership with Congreso after-school programming at two Philadelphia middle schools. On Thursday, December 11th, mentors Bridget Gunian and Cat Abacan, along with co-chair Kate Murphy, visited Roberto Clemente Middle School.  The following week, on December 16th, co-chair Maddie Marquart and mentors Amy Liu, Erin Levitt, Sarah Doan, and Neekita Joshi visited PAN American Academy Charter School.

TrYOU mentors introduced the students to Binary Code through a beading activity.  Without computers, and the coding that controls them, the Transportation industry would look different than it does today.   Nearly all electronic components inside a modern bus, subway, or car are connected to a computer program; everything from air conditioning, anti-lock braking systems, air bags, alarm systems, traction control, and cruise control.  Outside of vehicles, the programming of traffic signals, electronic payment and ticketing systems, and a vehicle’s back up sensors are just a few examples of the prevalence of coding in Transportation.
