Each month we are featuring one of our 2021 WTS Metropolitan Phoenix Awards recipients. This month we are spotlighting our Woman of the Year Award Recipient Traci Ruth with the Maricopa County Department of Transportation (MCDOT)

Traci Ruth brings more than 15 years of experience in transportation and construction communication to MCDOT and has served as the Department's Strategic Communications and Outreach Division Manager since June 2016. We asked her to share a little more about her career and interests.

What is the greatest thing you’ve learned from being part of WTS?

Never underestimate women on a mission…there is no limit to what we can accomplish when we work together and lift each other up.

What is your biggest achievement to date – personal or professional?

Outside of this award, I am most proud of the opportunities I have to serve others in my career.  Whether it is helping to build an incredible culture at MCDOT, helping customers with transportation issues or serving as a mentor, I love to see how my work positively affects people’s lives.

Who has influenced you the most in your career?

My mentors have influenced me most in my career.  I have been very fortunate to have four people who I look to as mentors. In chronological order… 1) Dennis Green was my original mentor who introduced me to construction communications and partnering. 2) My husband (Whitney Ruth) has been my key supporter and teacher regarding construction processes, risk mitigation and lean methodologies. 3) Jennifer Toth and Teresa Welborn have taught me not only how to lead but how to guide other women on the same journey.

What is something most people don’t know about you?

I was a volunteer fire fighter and EMT in my 20s. I also worked for a private ambulance company. During this time, I responded to traffic accidents, medical aid requests and a few fire calls.  It was a great adventure and I learned some valuable life skills.

What is something you can’t live without?

I look forward to opportunity and change.  Life is full of change and being willing to accept change and adapt is a key part of life that can bring new adventures.
