Congratulations to the WTS Metropolitan Phoenix Chapter's 2023 Woman of the Year, Amanda McGennis. Amanda recently retired from the Arizona Chapter of the Associated General Contractors of America after a long career supporting the Arizona transportation industry, and helping to promote the success of women in the industry.

She shared some of her favorite things and lessons she's learned over the years in this industry.

What motivated you to pursue a career in transportation and construction?

My first introduction to the transportation/infrastructure related industries was just by chance in 1989.  I needed a full time job after moving to Lexington, KY besides running the University of Kentucky Learn to Swim program.  I applied for the position of Seminar/Education Coordinator, at the Asphalt Institute a national/international trade association representing companies that produce or are affiliated with asphalt.  I was hired to coordinate training programs on asphalt materials and pavements across the U.S.  After a couple of years I was included on the team to coordinate FHWA’s Superpave training program. I had the opportunity to work with USDOT, and their division offices throughout the US, State DOT’s, contractors, material suppliers and testing labs.  I loved working with such a diverse group of individuals.  I also met my husband Bob McGennis, PE, a pavement materials genius, we moved to Arizona and was hired by another great trade association doing good things for the industry, the Arizona Chapter Associated General Contractors of America.  What a career it turned out to be.  I am truly blessed.

What would you say has been your biggest accomplishment in advancing women?

I love being an industry resource for everyone (both women and men) but I especially enjoy seeing women excel in transportation. If I can provide them with connections, opportunities, resource assistance or words of encouragement, it’s my way of giving back to an industry that has given so much to me and in return we realize a stronger, inclusive more diverse industry.

What is the greatest thing you’ve learned from being part of WTS?

How dedicated their mission and core values are to strengthening the transportation industry through the advancement of women.  WTS is showing women not only how to become Present in this industry but how to have Presence.

Who has influenced you the most in your career?

I don’t really have just one individual who has influenced me over another. This industry is full of amazing people who lead with integrity and over the years I have been lucky enough to be present in their company.  As a visual learner I am always watching people, so when I am provided the opportunity to be in the presence of greatness, I glean what I can and integrate it into my life.  One of the greatest examples I know – former Secretary of Transportation – Mary Peters.

What is something most people don’t know about you?

I used to be a Private Investigator for insurance companies, I was a Native American art dealer and I LOVE TO DANCE.
