Coffee Chat with Davey Kim

By Regis Stinson

On May 22nd, WTS-DC hosted a coffee chat with Davey Kim, former Secretary of Transportation for California and SVP and Principal for National Transportation Policy and Multimodal Strategy at WSP. In an open and inspiring conversation, Davey reflected on his career journey, the importance of connections, and the power of representation.

He shared how his appointment as California’s Transportation Secretary came not from a traditional application, but through long-standing relationships and a reputation built over time. “Every major role I’ve had came through connections,” he noted, underscoring the importance of cultivating meaningful professional networks.

Davey also introduced the origins of AALM—Asian American Leadership and Mobility—a growing initiative aimed at creating space for Asian American professionals in transportation to support one another, share stories, and grow into leadership roles. Representation, he emphasized, isn’t just about being seen; it’s about building pathways for others to rise.

Candid and thoughtful, Davey spoke honestly about the challenges of leadership and the importance of staying grounded. WTS-DC thanks him for his time, wisdom, and commitment to shaping a more inclusive future for our industry.
