Observed on June 19th, Juneteenth National Independence Day, or “Juneteenth,” is a federally recognized holiday that celebrates the formal end to the Civil War and the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth was officially recognized as a federal holiday in June 2021 due to the efforts of activist and transportation advocate, Ms. Opal Lee, the “Grandmother of Juneteenth.” Celebrations of Juneteenth can take many forms- some take the day to reflect on our nation’s past, others attend educational programming, community events, cookouts, and festivals to mark this important day.  In Philadelphia and the larger region, there are many events you can attend to learn, to celebrate, and to look back with thoughtful contemplation. Read on for events in Philadelphia, Montgomery, and Delaware County.
