All A-board! A Call for Volunteers

Are you interested in expanding your network? Do you want to get engaged with a professional networking organization? Have you ever wondered what it is like to be a volunteer on the WTS-DC Board?

The WTS-DC Board is looking for volunteers for 2021! The WTS-DC Board is comprised of 30-40 volunteers who sit on 12 different committees and the Executive Board. The mission of our organization is to attract, sustain, connect, and advance women’s careers to strengthen the transportation industry.

We are always excited about new volunteers and we are seeking volunteers to join our board for 2021, so now is a great time to ask questions about available opportunities.

Our 12 committees are:

  • Communications, Newsletter, and Social Media – this committee handles all of our communication channels on behalf of the chapter
  • Corporate Relations and Program Sponsorship – this committee seeks out corporate members to support our chapter
  • Diversity – this committee typically puts on one event each year and may also write newsletter articles on topics related to diversity and equality
  • Holiday Party – this committee organizes our annual holiday party, our premier event each year
  • Legislative – this committee typically puts on one event each year and may also write newsletter articles on topics related to legislation, Congress, and other related topics that impact the transportation industry
  • Membership – this committee managers our membership rosters and supports our efforts to increase our membership
  • Mentoring – this committee runs our mentoring program, which pairs WTS-DC members with mentors for a calendar year
  • Professional Development – this committee typically puts on multiple events each year and may also write newsletter articles
  • Program Logistics – this committee supports the logistics for all events
  • Recognitions – this committee organizes our annual recognition awards
  • Scholarship and Fundraising – this committee coordinates the scholarships that we give out annually
  • Transportation YOU – this committee works with girls in DC high schools and introduces them to careers in transportation and other STEM fields

More information about our committees is available online.

As part of the Board, we ask that committee chairs and deputy chairs participate in the monthly board meetings. During these meetings, we review chapter business and hear updates on what each of the committees are doing. While most of the meeting involves chapter business, we start off with a networking moment where each attendee shares something about themselves based on a pre-determined question. This gives us a chance to get to know each other better and to learn from one another. For example, in 2020, we have shared soft skills that we have learned, discussed professional skills we are developing, and relayed advice we have received from mentors.

There are so many benefits of being on the WTS-DC Board: You have the opportunity to expand your professional network, gain leadership experience, pursue professional development, learn from the experiences of others, and meet new friends!

If you are interested in volunteering with WTS-DC, please contact Neela Babu, WTS-DC President, at [email protected]. We look forward to hearing from you.
