Southwest Downtown Pedestrian Bridge in Colorado Springs

Later this year, a new 250-foot steel bridge floating above an active railyard will be completed, serving as a pedestrian gateway connecting America the Beautiful Park with downtown Colorado Springs. The prefabricated bridge had to travel from Texas to Colorado, and also cross 180-feet of active UPRR train tracks during placement. Designed by the same team as the adjacent U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Museum complex, the new pedestrian bridge takes its inspiration from the gravity-defying motion of athletes, with two interlocked loops, stretching from either side of the railyard, connecting the museum and the park.

The prefabricated bridge was designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro in collaboration with Anderson Mason Dale and structural engineers from ARUP and KL&A, and fabricated by King Fabrication in Houston before it traveled to Colorado Springs in sections, where it was assembled and welded together. In a feat of coordination, the entire 550-ton superstructure was driven into place using self-propelled modular transporters to place the entire bridge on its abutments during an eight-hour window of time, to minimize outage for the rail lines and yard in fall 2020.

Hear from the multidisciplinary, female-led team behind the bridge, who will be sharing a behind-the-scenes look at the process behind the bridge's design and construction.
