About the Book
When Driving Is Not an Option by Anna Zivarts explores transportation through the experiences of people who cannot or choose not to drive, including individuals with disabilities, older adults, youth, and others whose mobility needs are often overlooked. Drawing on research and personal stories, Zivarts demonstrates how transportation systems shape access to employment, healthcare, education, and community life. The book challenges readers to rethink long-held assumptions about mobility and advocates for transportation systems that are safe, accessible, and inclusive for everyone.
Why We're Reading This
As transportation professionals, the decisions we make influence how people connect to opportunities and navigate their daily lives. This book invites us to consider whose needs are prioritized—and whose are unintentionally left out—when planning, designing, and operating transportation systems. Through this discussion, WTS Boston’s DEI Committee hopes to foster meaningful conversations about accessibility, equity, and inclusive leadership, while encouraging us to build transportation networks that better serve all members of our communities. Participants are encouraged to join the conversation regardless of how much they’ve read, as shared perspectives and experiences are just as valuable as completing the book!
