Bowman Helps Improve Safety and Access at Broad, Germantown & Erie Intersection

At the busy Broad Street, Germantown Avenue and Erie Avenue intersection in North Philadelphia, Bowman helped address one of the city’s most complex crossroads.

The team analyzed crash trends, observed street-level movement and surveyed the location and surrounding area to understand long-standing issues. From there, Bowman designed and evaluated multiple intersection concepts to better serve everyone moving through the area, with a strong focus on those walking and connecting to transit. With six different SEPTA bus routes interfacing with its Broad Street Line rapid transit, there is a good deal of pedestrian activity mixing with substantial vehicular traffic.

The final plan calms Germantown Avenue’s through movements, improves transit patterns and introduces two improved pedestrian plazas, all while creating clearer, safer paths across the intersection.  As part of a companion project, SEPTA is providing full ADA access to the Broad Street Line’s Erie station with new elevators.

The Chapter recognized this work with its Innovative Transportation Solution Award at this year’s Gala. We’re proud to have contributed to an effort that puts safety and accessibility front and center for travelers.
