RVE provided engineering services for the design of short- and long-term safety improvements for the SR 743 crossing of the Conewago Recreational Trail in Mount Joy Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. A number of rear-end crashes had occurred because of drivers yielding to trail users crossing, and there was a clear need for improvements to enhance safety for both trail users and motorists.

Improvements included a fully actuated traffic control signal with passive detection, high-visibility advanced warning signs approaching the trail crossing, high-visibility warning signs at the trail crossing and warning signs on the trail approaches. The design process required communication with multiple stakeholders and RVE was able to successfully navigate the project’s challenges, resulting in an important community safety project that was completed ahead of schedule and within budget.
