WTS Tampa Bay Explores Environmental Stewardship with FDOT

WTS Tampa Bay welcomed Katasha Gruver, Director of the Office of Environmental Management at the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), for an engaging and insightful presentation on how environmental stewardship is integrated into transportation planning and delivery across Florida.

Katasha highlighted key environmental management activities underway in FDOT Districts statewide, emphasizing how thoughtful planning, innovation, and collaboration allow Florida to expand and modernize its transportation network while protecting the natural resources that make the state unique. From wildlife crossings and habitat connectivity to water quality initiatives, the discussion illustrated how environmental considerations are embedded into project development from early planning through construction.

A particularly compelling portion of the presentation focused on wildlife crossings and species protection, including FDOT’s efforts to design infrastructure that improves safety for motorists and wildlife alike. Katasha also discussed the Panama City crayfish (Procambarus econfinae), a federally threatened species found only in Bay County, and how transportation projects must carefully account for sensitive habitats as development continues in the state's growing areas. Additional examples showcased FDOT’s broader environmental initiatives, including living shoreline projects, innovative monitoring technologies, and educational efforts such as the I‑75 Alligator Alley Environmental Education Project, reinforcing FDOT’s commitment to balancing mobility, safety, and conservation.

As Florida’s population continues to grow and congestion relief remains a top priority, the presentation underscored an important message: transportation solutions must advance hand‑in‑hand with environmental responsibility. By proactively protecting wildlife, waterways, and ecosystems, FDOT is helping ensure that infrastructure investments serve both current needs and future generations.

WTS Tampa Bay thanks Katasha Gruver for sharing her expertise and providing a meaningful look at how environmental management plays a critical role in shaping Florida’s transportation system.
