On Tuesday, April 28, 2026, the WTS DC Chapter’s Transportation YOU Committee in collaboration with WMATA, hosted a field trip for Dunbar High School’s engineering students at WMATA’s newly built Bladensburg Bus Garage. 21 High School Seniors attended this unique, behind-the-scenes look at one of the region’s newest bus facilities. Volunteers Paquilla Jones and Heather Haney attended as well.

The tour began in the state-of-the-art Bus Maintenance Shop, where Metro professionals demonstrated how Metro’s fleet is inspected, serviced, and prepared for daily operations. Students observed advanced maintenance practices and learned how cutting-edge diagnostic tools help ensure safety and reliability across the system. The group then toured the Transportation Division offices and training rooms, where Metro employees shared insights into day-to-day operations and workforce development. Students had the opportunity to see firsthand how operators and technicians are trained.

One of the highlights of the visit was the interactive discussion with Metro employees from various departments. Students asked thoughtful and forward-looking questions about career pathways, required training and certifications, and the evolving role of technology in transportation. Conversations explored how innovations such as artificial intelligence are being integrated into planning, maintenance, and system optimization, underscoring the rapidly changing landscape of the transit industry.

The discussion also touched on WMATA’s transition toward a more sustainable future. Students learned about the agency’s efforts to expand its fleet of electric and alternative-fuel buses, as well as the infrastructure needed to support them.

Equally impactful was the conversation about opportunities for young people entering the workforce. Metro representatives highlighted internships, apprenticeships, and career pathways available to students interested in transportation, engineering, and operations. By sharing personal career journeys and practical advice, employees helped students envision themselves as future contributors to the industry.  The field trip exemplifies WTS’s mission to advance women and underrepresented groups in transportation while inspiring the next generation of leaders.
