2026 promises to be an exciting year for large-scale events in Philadelphia and across the nation. In honor of the country’s 250th birthday, Philadelphia will host the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the PGA tournament, and the MLB All-Star Game.

On April 7th at Lemon Hill Mansion, the WTS Philadelphia Student Chapter hosted an event focused on how the city is preparing for these major events. Api Appulingam, Chief Development Officer at the City of Philadelphia’s Department of Aviation, shared updates on airport improvements designed to accommodate the anticipated crowds in 2026. These enhancements prepare the airport for this milestone year while also planning for future travel demand and facility upgrades.

We also heard from MaryAnn Tierney, SEPTA’s Chief Officer for the Control Center, who discussed service changes to accommodate increased ridership and manage crowds using public transit and walking. Our final speaker, Richard Montanez, Deputy Commissioner for the City of Philadelphia, described the ambitious plans for a Fanfest spanning all 39 days of the FIFA World Cup. Philadelphia is uniquely offering a free event throughout the entire competition, a significant logistical effort. Additionally, upgrades to Lemon Hill Mansion are planned, including repaving the parking lot and paths, replacing an old pavilion, and making general improvements to the property.

We thank our speakers for providing students with an insightful, firsthand look at the preparations for this special year in Philadelphia.
