From Rail Hub to Neighborhood: The 30th Street District Plan
On February 25th, the WTS Philadelphia Chapter held an engaging lunch and panel discussion exploring the transformative 30th Street Station District Plan. Attendees gathered at the Union League of Philadelphia and were treated to a presentation highlighting ongoing efforts to reimagine one of Philadelphia’s busiest transportation hubs as a vibrant, sustainable, and highly connected district. Panelists from Amtrak, SEPTA, and Brandywine Realty Trust shared insights into the plan’s core goals of community, connectivity, and identity, and discussed the progress made since the plan’s completion in 2016.
Described as “similar to a game of Tetris”, speakers emphasized the complexity of renovating an active historic station while keeping people and transportation moving, including major upgrades such as ceiling restoration (expected in summer 2026), installation of new generators, and the rehabilitation of escalators and elevators. They also stressed the importance of community engagement and quarterly collaboration among stakeholders and regional partners.
Looking ahead, the panel addressed what has changed since 2016, the challenges of long‑term implementation, and what projects Philadelphians can expect as the roadmap extends toward 2050. Continued focus on wayfinding, accessibility, and creating a “new front door to Philadelphia” remains central as the district evolves.
Many thanks to our esteemed panel:
