Anniversary of the ADA
The WTS Philadelphia ED&I Committee celebrates the 35th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, which was signed into law on July 26, 1990. The ADA was a landmark piece of legislation advocating for the rights of Americans with disabilities. More than 1 in 4 adults in the United States has a physical disability. And approximately 60% of us will experience a change of ability in our lifetime. Accessibility is important for all of us, whether you move through the world as an able-bodied person, care for a child or older family member, or have an invisible disability such as autism or blindness.
While we are fortunate to live and work in an area with accessible transportation to give us a choice in how we move around, we still have progress to make in ensuring accessibility options to meet each of us where we are. The agencies highlighted here- the Philadelphia International Airport, the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority, and the Port Authority Transportation Corporation are just some of the many agencies in the City of Philadelphia that have taken action on moving accessible transportation in the right direction.
