Sergeant Nicholas Davison

Sergeant Davison began his career with the Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office in 2006. Prior to that he served in the United States Coast Guard while obtaining a B.A in Psychology. During his time with the Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office, he has served in the Corrections, Civil Process, Courts, and Training divisions. Sergeant Davison became a Defensive Tactics/combatives instructor with the VBSO in 2010. Since obtaining his instructorship, he has spent the last 15 years teaching self-defense. He has trained hundreds of officers both locally and statewide. He is currently the lead defensive tactics instructor of the Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office’s Emergency Response Team (ERT) and supervises the training division. In addition to his law enforcement training experience, Sgt. Davison has spent the last few years traveling and teaching self-defense to both hospital security and college campus security officers, to include several women’s self-defense seminars. He also teaches a “senior safety” self-defense seminar to the senior citizens of Hampton Roads, and is a martial arts instructor at Ocean Martial Arts, located in Virginia Beach. He has over 20 years of hand-to-hand combat experience, to include boxing, muay thai, wrestling, and Brazilian jiu jitsu.

Deputy Leanna Mullen

Deputy Mullen graduated from Radford University in 2018 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice. She then went on to join the Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office shortly after. She is currently the Basic Academy Coordinator for the training division, serving as a Squad Leader for the Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office Basic Academy Classes. She recently became a DCJS certified Defensive Tactics Instructor, where she leads training sessions focused on deputy safety and control techniques, preparing personnel to respond effectively and lawfully in high-stress situations. As a woman of smaller stature, Deputy Mullen emphasizes the importance of situational awareness, de-escalation skills, proper techniques, and legal justification when applying force. Physical fitness plays a significant role in her life and she has always enjoyed it. In her youth, she played travel soccer locally for Beach FC for several years, while also balancing high school varsity soccer and field hockey, which helped deepen her appreciation for fitness. In her personal time, she enjoys watching sunrises on the beach, hiking in the mountains, longboarding, snowboarding, spending quality time with her two dogs, and relaxing with a good book. She often says that learning is a lifelong journey, and she strives to apply this philosophy every day.
