Steering Towards Awareness: Combating Human Trafficking in the Transportation Industry

On April 4th, we hosted a Human Trafficking Awareness Lunch & Learn, bringing together leadership from local transit organizations including SEPTA's General Manager, Leslie Richards; Airport Security Manager, Jason Sankey; and PA Department of Transportation's Deputy Policy Director, Marisa Balanda. Attendees gained insights into how these organizations are implementing strategies to raise awareness and prevent human trafficking, including employee training, informative signage, and multi-media campaigns.

Tamara Nicholson, WTS Philadelphia Secretary, also offered insightful background on human trafficking and the warning signs to look out for. Subject Matter Experts have noted, “Transportation is really the first place where victims of human trafficking can be intercepted and possibly escape or be freed.” As transportation professionals, we have a unique position to recognize and report potential instances of trafficking. A recording and resources from the event are provided below to continue the important conversation and support efforts to end human trafficking.
