August 8, 2022: WTS-LA's Professional Development/Mentorship committee held a virtual panel discussion with human resource managers, recruiters, and transportation executives who shared insights and strategies on career advancement.

Moderated by Lisa Levy Buch, Chief Communications & Strategic Development Officer for Metro Gold Line Foothill Extension Construction Authority, panelists included: 

• Dina Aryan-Zahlan, P.E., Chief Harbor Engineer, Port of Los Angeles
• Joe Piotrowski, Executive Recruiter, Parsons
• Gloria Roberts, Acting Director, Caltrans District 7
• Ashlien Savage, Human Resources Manager, Foothill Transit

The panel discussed how organizations support and train leaders, what skills or qualities they are seeking, how to differentiate your resume, current trends and pitfalls they are seeing amongst applicants, interview and salary negotiation tips, and lessons learned from their own experience.

Approximately two dozen attendees benefited from excellent advice from panelists, such as in addition to technical skills, strengthen business acumen; get to know you team, be open to leadership positions, and learn how to build consensus amongst cross-discipline teams; get involved in organizations such as WTS International and American Public Transportation Association (APTA), which have leadership programs; go beyond your comfort level and don't underestimate yourself; and find and be a mentor.  Everyone emphasized the importance of building and maintaining working relationships and networks.
