Embracing Each Decade of Your Professional Life

By Laura Frein, CPSM, Business Development & Marketing Manager, Surface Transportation Market

Turning 40 isn't what it used to be. For many professionals, it's not even the midpoint of their career.

As someone who's about to cross that milestone, I've realized that the experiences I've gained in the last two decades have been essential to my growth as a person and a professional. The truth is, there's no shortcut to experience; it takes time and can't be rushed. Every new experience - whether it's a success, a mistake, or a lesson learned - contributes to our growth and development.

As we progress in our careers, it's important to embrace each decade and make the most of the opportunities to learn and grow. While it can be tempting to rush titles and promotions, it's crucial to be patient and gain experience along the way. One way to do this is by getting involved in internal task forces or committees at your company. This can help you learn more about business processes, corporate services, and technical skills. Additionally, actively participating in professional organizations, attending meetings, and conferences can help build a valuable network that can benefit you throughout your career.

It is important to be proud of our accomplishments and be open to the journey ahead. Embracing each day, week, and year as an opportunity to learn and grow will set you up for long-term success. Remember that experience is necessary for success, and it takes time to gain it. So, take the time to maximize opportunities to learn and grow, and don't forget to learn from those who have come before you.
