2022 Scholarship Winners Honored During 25th Annual Banquet

Mariam Nour, University of Central Florida | Memorial Graduate Scholarship
Mariam graduated with a bachelor's degree in Network Engineering with honors from the German University in Cairo and a master's degree in Civil Engineering, Smart Cities Track from the University of Central Florida. She was awarded the Overseas Research Center fellowship for the duration of her PhD in the Civil Engineering Department, Transportation Track at the University of Central Florida, and is currently in her second year and the main researcher on an FDOT project focusing on safety in smart work zones. She has worked on other exciting and cutting-edge technology projects including a SAFER-SIM funded project for analyzing the impact of connected autonomous vehicles on safety during hurricane evacuation events, and developing Advanced Driver Assistance Systems products as a data science intern in the company Connected-Wise. In addition, her work introducing a new traffic monitoring approach was published in the TRR Journal and presented in the 101st Transportation Research Board (TRB) annual conference.

Tessa Flemma, University of Florida | Leadership Graduate Scholarship
Tess Flemma is a student at the University of Florida pursuing her master’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning. She is part of a Combined Degree Program, where she has been working toward her undergraduate and master's degrees simultaneously. She graduated from the University of Florida with her undergraduate degree in Environmental Science in 2021,​ and is currently in the last semester of her master's degree with a concentration in Sustainable Design. Tess has studied abroad in New Zealand and even served as Executive Director for Our Planet, Inc., a non-profit that she co-founded, which focuses on conservation and sustainable farming. Her focus is on sustainable infrastructure and has been studying planning, and by extension, transit to support more ecologically friendly practices. In addition to being a full-time student, she interned for the Planning and Zoning Department of Levy County, and received an American Planning Association scholarship for the Florida Conference.

Shemania Accema, Valencia College | Memorial Undergraduate Scholarship 
Shemania recently received her AA degree from Valencia College, graduating with a 3.7 GPA, and has transferred to the University of Florida where she is a junior majoring in Geomatics. She has held GIS internships at LYNX and Southeastern Surveying and Mapping, and has gained experience in the field at MacGillivary Surveying and Mapping working as an apprentice to a project surveyor. Shemania is a member of the Central Florida Chapter of the Florida Surveying and Mapping Society. She served as a peer mentor in the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation and Vice President of Valencia’s STEM Club.

Azza Alisawi, University of Central Florida | Graduate Leadership Scholarship
Azza graduated from the University of Jordan with a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering. She has worked in different engineering companies in Jordan as an office engineer assistant. Azza is currently pursuing her master’s degree in Transportation Engineering at the University of Central Florida and working in several transportation research projects with FDOT focused mainly on traffic operations such as distracted driving, flashing yellow arrow, and innovative safety messages. Azza is working closely with WTS Central Florida and Dr. Hatem Abou-Senna to establish the UCF Knights WTS Student Chapter, and she will serve as the Vice President of the chapter for the 2022-2023 academic year.
