The Women's Transportation Seminar - Greater New York (WTS-GNY) Chapter was incorporated and held its first organizational meeting in September 1980, with more than forty women holding professional positions in the transportation industry from New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. The Chapter was officially welcomed as the fifth in WTS’s growing network in 1981.

Since that time, WTS-GNY has grown to the largest Chapter with more than 650 members, supported by members, private companies and public agencies all over the region. The programs and events offered by WTS-GNY address all stages of women’s transportation careers. Outreach, mentoring, and education begins with our Transportation YOU program, which pairs high school students ages 13-18 with professional mentors to learn about transportation careers; WTS-GNY also awards a series of scholarships every year to promising students. WTS-GNY engages in college outreach and has established our first Student Chapter at RPI. For members early in their careers, the Chapter offers a range of events to connect young professionals in the transportation industry (and the young-at-heart are always welcome!). In 2002, the WTS-GNY Chapter launched its first Mentoring Program which is still going strong today. This program offers apprentices a yearlong assignment to individual mentors, and provides a series of group and private projects designed to address various career aspects. WTS-GNY also offers quarterly dinner programs, smaller roundtable discussions with women leaders in transportation, and professional development programs for those at all stages of their careers. The Chapter constantly strives to further the WTS mission, which is to attract, sustain, connect and advance women’s careers to strengthen the transportation industry. We know that the industry can only be truly transformed when women are provided with the resources and support to overcome obstacles, access equal opportunities and achieve great things. The importance of diversity and inclusion in providing services that improve the skills and advance women in transportation careers is a cornerstone of the organization. It is also the passion of the GNY Board, Committees, and volunteers, and we recognize the roles and contributions of all genders, students and seasoned professionals, large agencies and small businesses working together towards this end.
