WTS Invited to State of the Union Briefing

Vice President Joe Biden

Marcia Ferranto, WTS International President and CEO, was among the guests representing approximately 125 organizations and communities invited to a White House briefing on the policies and themes that were laid out Tuesday night in President Obama’s State of the Union address.

The briefing, held this morning, was facilitated by Vice President Joe Biden and consisted of a plenary session and issue-area breakouts.

“Organizations like WTS were invited to this briefing to learn about the President’s plan for the next four years and take it back to our communities throughout the country,” said Ferranto. “As pointed out today during the briefing, the cultural change required to make the President’s plan work doesn’t begin at the federal level, it starts with the local level. With 47 chapters in the United States, WTS International is prepared to focus on the President’s plan.”

The White House is looking to WTS, the only multimodal transportation association aimed at attracting women to the industry, to support President Obama’s plan for the country’s infrastructure that he mentioned in the State of the Union address:

“America’s energy sector is just one part of an aging infrastructure badly in need of repair. Ask any CEO where they’d rather locate and hire -- a country with deteriorating roads and bridges, or one with high-speed rail and Internet; high-tech schools, self-healing power grids...

“So tonight, I propose a “Fix-It-First” program to put people to work as soon as possible on our most urgent repairs, like the nearly 70,000 structurally deficient bridges across the country And to make sure taxpayers don’t shoulder the whole burden, I’m also proposing a Partnership to Rebuild America that attracts private capital to upgrade what our businesses need most: modern ports to move our goods, modern pipelines to withstand a storm, modern schools worthy of our children. Let’s prove that there’s no better place to do business than here in the United States of America, and let’s start right away. We can get this done.”

WTS International is poised to answer the President’s call with its focus on workforce development through the attraction, retention, and advancement of women in the transportation industry. “WTS membership represents every transportation mode and every service within the industry. From federal leaders to engineers and planners, the WTS membership base represents nearly 1,500 companies and 400 agencies in more than 90 cities.  We’re prepared to stand behind the President and get his message out to our chapters nationwide,” added Ferranto.
