Mary Barra, CEO General Motors
WTS International, the association for the global advancement of women in transportation, congratulated Mary Barra, a veteran employee at General Motors who began there 30 years ago as an engineering student, to her new post as the company’s Chief Executive Officer. Her position makes Barra the first female CEO at GM, and the first female CEO in the automotive industry.
Marcia Ferranto, President and CEO of WTS International, made a statement today: “WTS is thrilled with General Motors for appointing its first woman CEO. This appointment will help attract more women to automotive professions. Bringing more women into this male-dominated field is key to the future success of the industry. It’s important for young women and men in automotive to be able to look up and see more women in leadership roles. Hats off to General Motors’ Board of Directors for appointing Ms. Barra. Women in transportation across the globe appreciate and celebrate the decision.”
