Obama Nominates Anthony Foxx for US DOT Secretary

April 29, 2013 03:07 PM

A White House official has announced that President Obama will nominate Charlotte, NC, Mayor, Anthony Foxx, as the new Secretary of the US Department of Transportation, replacing Ray LaHood.

“WTS International is looking forward to working with Mr. Foxx to continue the course that Secretary LaHood has set out for the future of the transportation workforce and the advancement of women,” said Marcia Ferranto, WTS President and CEO.

The path Ferranto refers to is his work partnering with organizations like WTS, the association for the professional advancement of women in transportation, with an eye on the future. “Workforce development is critical for this country and the world’s future, and bringing young women and other critical populations into the industry is where Secretary LaHood’s passion came through,” she added.

WTS International’s work with USDOT includes the Transportation YOU program, which began as a joint effort of WTS and the DOT at the signing of a memorandum of understanding in 2010 to create programs that encourage 13 – 17 year old girls to set out on an academic path that leads to a career in transportation.

Anthony Foxx has led efforts to improve Charlotte’s transit infrastructure to expand economic opportunity for businesses and workers. During his term as mayor, Charlotte broke ground on several important transportation projects, including the Charlotte Streetcar Project to bring modern electric tram service to the city as well as a third parallel runway at Charlotte/Douglas International Airport.
