Message from the WTS International Board Chair, Maggie Walsh

Mentorship and a sense of belonging are key attributes of being a member at WTS. We all benefit when a colleague shows us the ropes and create access to new opportunities. Since stepping in as Chair of the WTS International Board of Directors in May, I have seen first-hand the success of these actions.

When I heard a DC Summit mentee say, "I belong in this room," I got the goose bumps. I knew she saw opportunities for her future and she was eager to grab a hold of what's possible. WTS started this summit 8 years ago. It is a 5-day program that is designed to introduce, inspire, and guide young women from across the country toward a college future in STEM studies (science, technology, engineering, and math) and a career in the transportation industry. 22 dedicated WTS members traveled to DC with their mentee and had the mentorship experience of a lifetime.

Keeping our international connection alive and well, I spent an evening with 30 members of our Toronto Chapter in mid July. This 5-year old Chapter is booming with intriguing minds and interested to be far more connected to the wider WTS organization. The use of our fully launched Region Councils is an excellent way to connect Chapter best practices and support one another with ideas and lessons learned.

Did you know that we can mentor women and men at any stage in our careers, and it pays off when we do? Women who are mentored by women feel more supported and are often more satisfied with their career. Men who mentor women and work well with them tap the full talents of their entire teams resulting in outperformance of their peers.

My ask of you - invite an up and coming rising star (who can be of any age by the way) to your next weekly, monthly, strategy, etc meeting. Or ask to attend a meeting hosted by your mentor. I have found that people simply have a high sense of curiosity of what happens in your meetings. Invite them to sit at the table and absorb the environment. This is a simple gesture that has a high return on investment.

Like all good relationships, mentorship is a two-way street. Let's keep this going at WTS. We're recognized for it.
