Local Girl Scouts learn how to create a bicycle friendly community

Transportation_YOU_Logo
The WTS-KC TransportationYOU committee hosted its second event of the year on Saturday, October 6, in partnership with BikeWalkKC. Girl Scout Troop 2090 from Odessa, Mo. joined us for a workshop on creating a bicycle friendly community.  We explored what it means to be an engineer, planner or architect in the transportation industry.  We also considered what it means to be an advocate and the importance of relationship building within your community. The rain kept us inside, but that didn’t stop us from using Google Maps to complete a virtual street diagnosing exercise of several blocks of Troost Avenue. We used this exercise  to talk about sidewalk width, positioning of bike lanes, and the influence of buildings and streetscape on how safe you feel as a pedestrian or bicyclist.

We challenged the young women to use the information they learned to create their own streets using the StreetMix app, an online interactive street section builder. The roadway designs they came up with created great conversation as we talked through the application of these exercises in everyday life.

To wrap up the day, BikeWalkKC provided a demonstration of how to fix a flat tire and gave each girl a hands-on opportunity to remove and replace a bicycle tire inner tube.

We had a great time working with BikeWalkKC and look forward to our second annual Fall in Love with Transportation event coming up in February 2019.
