Visit to the TfL Track Hazard School and Stratford Depot

09:30 AM - 12:30 PM GMT Standard Time

Not only is this event a unique opportunity for WTS London members to gain some hands-on experience at TfL’s Track Hazard School, but they are invited to bring along a child, giving them an early introduction to the enormous task of maintaining and keeping the London Underground running.

This training facility provides a controlled environment for members and their children to try their hazard spotting skills in a realistic track environment without the risks of live conductor rails and moving trains. It comprises a section of genuine LU ballasted track and fixed equipment that is dressed with a range of hazards.

Neil Pepper MBE, Safety Manager of TfL will invite attendees to inspect the area in pairs, detailing the hazards they recognise. After the observation period, the entire group will be brought together and the hazards identified and their potential impact on individuals and passenger service explained. Neil will also outline the history of the tube system and its construction.

This will be followed by a tour of the Stratford Depot taking in the train cleaning and maintenance sheds, the stores and the control room.

Hi visibility vests and safety footwear can be provided but it would be helpful if you are able to bring your own.  Unfortunately this tour is only suitable for members who have no walking impairment due to the risks involved in walking on the track and uneven ground.

Children who wear shoes smaller than a size four cannot be supplied with safety boots. In this case we would ask that children wear sturdy shoes – which means, boots or shoes that are tied with laces and not slip-ons.

It is imperative that children wear appropriate footwear or they will not be allowed to enter the Track Hazard area.  If you would like further clarification of the footwear requirement please contact us at WTSLondonChapter@wtsinternational.org

We recommend the minimum age for this tour is 8 years old but if you have a younger child that you feel would be particularly interested to attend please let us know and we will do our best to accommodate you.

We have places for just eight adults accompanied by children and the event is only open to WTS London members.
