The Connecting to Opportunity Summit

09:30 AM - 05:00 PM Central Standard Time

GoTriangle, Triangle J Council Of Governments, and Gateway Planning would like to invite WTS members to join us at an event on February 6th at DPAC. It is free and lunch will be provided.

Connecting to Opportunity Summit

Learn About the Opportunities of the Coming Durham-Orange Light Rail

The Durham-Orange Light Rail line that will connect Chapel Hill and Durham is moving forward toward construction. This investment in transit and station area neighborhoods will promote economic growth, increased access to opportunity, affordability, and equity.

Join us for the CONNECTING TO OPPORTUNITY SUMMIT: a day of learning and discussion with local and national experts.

This event is hosted by GoTriangle, Gateway Planning, and Triangle J Council of Governments.

Please register by January 31, 2018.

Agenda

9:30 to 9:45am (Introduction):  Many Places, One Community

9:45 to 10:00am:  Steps Ahead
GoTriangle will present the opportunities this regionally significant project promises, including the steps ahead as the initiative moves forward to full funding and construction.

10:30 to 11:00am:  “The U-Line”
Representatives of the three world-class universities along “The U-Line” will discuss its benefits for their students, staff, faculty and the community.

11:00 to 11:30am:  #LiveConnected
The Town of Chapel Hill and the City of Durham will share their visions and aspirations of a more connected region, with a focus on the social and economic benefits.

11:30am to 12:30pm:  #Housing4all
One of the most pressing issues facing the Triangle Region – and the nation – is a lack of attainably priced and workforce housing.  Learn from national experts about how innovation and partnerships will be required to incorporate that housing into station area development.

12:30 to 12:45pm:  Lunch Provided

12:45 to 1:30pm:  Equity Investing and Lending in the TOD Context
A panel of local and national developers, bankers and finance experts will address how to finance Transit-Oriented Development while achieving equitable results.

1:30 to 2:15pm:  Small can be Big
A growing trend is the “small home” phenomenon.  Learn how innovative solutions such as micro units, small homes and accessory dwellings can provide choice and mitigate gentrification or displacement through the provision of attainably priced housing and a new source of income for home owners.

2:15 to 3:45pm:  A “shrinking” Region
How expansive are the opportunities of connectivity within the corridor and into the greater region?  The panel, a cross section of interests from urban to suburban to rural, will discuss how the light rail system can provide lifestyle and fiscal benefits throughout the region.

3:45 to 4:15pm:  Joint Development and Placemaking
From transit agencies to the development community, transit-oriented development opens up many possibilities to leverage federal funding for local placemaking. Panelists will discuss the intersection of public and private investment for TOD neighborhoods.

4:15 to 5pm:  Transit-Friendly Walkable Neighborhoods
A region is really a collection of neighborhoods and places.  Municipal and private sector panelists will discuss the broader implications of good neighborhood design and development that the initiative represents.

5:30 to 7:30pm:  Social Happy Hour
