Technical Seminar: Real Life Bridge Emergencies (2 PDH)

11:00 AM - 01:00 PM Eastern Standard Time

Technical Seminar Event (2 PDH)

Real Life Bridge Emergencies

2 PDH Credits Offered

This special event will feature:

Jim Stump, PE
Bridge Engineer Manager
Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission

Francesco Russo, PhD, PE
Associate Vice President
Michael Baker International

Mr. Stump will discuss the emergency repair of the PA/NJ Turnpike Connector Bridge in Bristol, PA.

In January 2017, a fracture in the top tension chord of a four-span continuous deck truss was discovered, forcing the immediate closure of the bridge connecting the PA and NJ Turnpikes over the Delaware River at Bristol, PA. Within hours, emergency repair designs were underway along with the fabrication of temporary splices. Concurrently, the construction of emergency shoring/jacking towers had begun, and a plan was being developed to assess the 14 spans of deck trusses composing the PA and NJ approaches. The bridge was reopened less than seven weeks after the date of the fracture. Learn how the jacking and restoration of the chord made a difference, as well as what sorts of material and nondestructive tests were conducted.

Mr. Russo will discuss the Sherman Minton Tied Arch over the Ohio River in Louisville, KY.

The Sherman Minton Bridge consists of two double-deck tied arch spans. A history of cracking associated with the tie girders spurred an intensive hands-on and nondestructive evaluation program, during which the concerns increased. The bridge was closed, and an emergency repair design involved providing a redundant load path to the existing tie and performing various preemptive retrofits to the existing tie girder in the interim.
