Scholarship Applications are due!

August 13, 2012

To Whom It May Concern:

Founded in 1977, the Women's Transportation Seminar (WTS) was created through the efforts of 40 women involved in transportation in the Washington, DC, area who recognized that a mechanism was needed to enhance professional and personal advancement and to develop industry and government recognition of the increasing involvement of women in the field of transportation. WTS is now an international organization of more than 4,000 transportation professionals - both women and men - with 45 chapters representing cities and states in the United States, Canada and Great Britain.

WTS’s vision is “Transforming the transportation industry through the advancement of women”.  To facilitate that goal, the next generation of leaders must be fostered and supported in their pursuits.  Our Scholarship Program is one way that we demonstrate this support.

The WTS Central Virginia Chapter, on behalf of WTS Foundation (WTSF), is pleased to send you the 2012-2013 WTS Scholarship Application packets.  This packet contains:

  • Helene M. Overly Memorial Scholarship Application (graduate - $10,000)
  • WTS Leadership Legacy Scholarship Application (graduate - $5,000)
  • Sharon D. Banks Memorial Scholarship Application (undergraduate - $5,000)
  • Molitoris Leadership Scholarship Application (undergraduate - $5,000)
  • Transportation YOU National Scholarship (high school senior girls) ($1,000)
  • Junior College and trade School Scholarship ($1,000)

Our Central Virginia Chapter also offers local Scholarship awards in the amount of $500.00 for each of the above Scholarships. This year for the first time we will also be awarding the Patricia G. Napier Future Transportation Leader Scholarship in the amount of $500.00 to a high school senior girl who demonstrates through the application process her interest in pursuing a career in any of the many transportation arenas.

Please note that completed scholarship applications must be received by WTS Central Virginia Chapter by Monday, November 5, 2012.  Applications may be mailed or emailed to:

Due to the committee evaluation process and our schedule for announcing the National winners, any applications received after 5:00 p.m. (Eastern Standard Time) on November 5th will not be considered.  National winners will be notified in January 2013.  Scholarships will be awarded at the WTS Annual National Conference in May 2013 and attendance at the awards dinner is strongly recommended.

We are very excited to offer the WTS Leadership Legacy Scholarship for Graduates.  We recommend that the Graduate level applicant apply for both graduate scholarships and rewrite their application to meet the criteria outlined.

Working together, WTSF and local chapters have awarded over $200,000 in scholarships to nearly 140 of the best and brightest women seeking careers in transportation since 1994.

If you have any questions concerning the applications or materials, please do not hesitate to contact me, Patsy Napier, at 804-349-8132 (direct number) or at pgnapier@mccormicktaylor.com.  I look forward to receiving your applications!
