You Can’t Be What You Can’t See
Please join the San Francisco Bay Area chapter of Women’s Transportation Seminar (WTS) and the Northern California Chapter of the Conference of Minority Transportation Officials (COMTO) for this special event.
This powerful documentary explores how mainstream media contributes to the under-representation of women in influential positions. The film draws from stories from local teenage girls and interviews with Katie Couric, Rachel Maddow, Condoleezza Rice, Gloria Steinem, and others with an inside look at the media and its messages.
There will be a 30-minute panel discussion and Q&A session immediately after the screening moderated by Belva Davis, our own Bay Area media trailblazer, journalist and author. She and panelist Celina Rodriguez, a local journalist and producer, broke gender and racial barriers in mainstream media to launch successful careers as reporters and television anchors. Bimla Rhinehart, Executive Director of the California Transportation Commission, will provide insight on this relevant issue from a transportation professional’s viewpoint. Also joining us will be a high school student and member of Girls Inc. of Alameda County to provide a young future leader’s perspective on how media images can shape success at an early age.
