The Charlotte Department of Transportation has been striving to make the City more pedestrian friendly.  One way the City has been doing this is to install Leading Pedestrian Intervals (LPI) which give pedestrians a head start before traffic starts to move.  Recently, a right turn flashing yellow arrow has been used to hold turning traffic while the pedestrians cross the street.  This treatment can significantly improve the pedestrian crossing experience without affecting intersection capacity by reducing the conflict between the right-turning traffic and the pedestrians on the cross walk.  Today, the City has 7 intersections with 13 cross walks controlled by right turn flashing yellow arrows and a priority list to introduce this facility at several intersections a year. Mr. Barakzai will present lessons learned due to the site variation, traffic patterns and signal operation at the 13 individual crosswalks where right turn flashing yellow arrows have been implemented.
Mr. Saleem Barakzai joined the CDOT Signal Systems group in August 2008. Prior to that he completed a Master's degree in Transportation in England followed by 10 years of traffic engineering and 20 years of traffic signal experience at the World Bank, City & County Councils in England and 8 years of self-employment.
Engineers attending this program could earn 1.0 Professional Development Hour.
