June WTS Reading Group – Thinking straight in age of information overload and digital distraction
We hope you’ll join us for our next WTS Reading Group, as we explore strategies for organizing and managing our professional and personal lives in order to focus on the rewarding things in life in the face of information overload and digital distraction. To do so, we will discuss the ideas presented in two recent books: The organized mind: Thinking straight in the age of information overload by Daniel Levitin and Irresistible: The rise of addictive technology and the business of keeping us hooked by Adam Alter. Readings related to these two books use neuroscience and psychology to help us in understanding how to navigate decision-making in the age of information overload, and how to gain awareness about and mitigate the effects of digital products and media on our well-being.
Several articles and other resources that present these ideas will be provided in advance, including:

  • “Thinking straight in the age of information overload” by Shane Parrish for Farnam Street (2014)
  • “Daniel J. Levitin Q&A: ‘We’ve created more information in the past few years than in all of human history,’” interview by Lisa O’Kelly for The Guardian (2015)
  •  “Why we can’t look away from our screens” by Claudia Dreifus for The New York Times (2017)
  • “Tech bigwigs know how addictive their products are. Why don’t the rest of us? By Adam Alter for Wired (2017)
  • Presentation by Daniel Levitin for The Chicago Ideas Week (2015).

When: Thursday, June 8th 12 to 1PM
Where: Norton Building conference room, 801 2nd Ave between Marion/Columbia, 2nd floor (downtown Seattle)
There is no cost for attendance. Coffee and light snacks will be provided.

Please RSVP to Kara Luckey (kara.luckey@gmail.com) by Tuesday, June 6th if you plan to attend. Please also let Kara know if you cannot attend the June meeting, but are interested in learning more about future Reading Groups.
