Momentum – The Next Generation of Metro, a conversation with Richard Sarles, WMATA GM & CEO

07:45 AM - 09:30 AM Eastern Standard Time

Join WTS-DC for its 2013 “Conversation with Richard Sarles”, the General Manager and CEO of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transportation Authority (WMATA).

This year, Mr. Sarles will speak on the topic of Momentum – The Next Generation of Metro, the newly unveiled strategic plan to rebuild and expand the region’s transit system to meet a 2025 vision and priorities.  The conversation builds on his prior discussions about the challenges of managing, maintaining, and investing in an aging transit system that needs to be positioned for the future.  Mr. Sarles brings extensive experience dealing with complex transit systems, having served in senior positions at NJ Transit, Amtrak, and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

About Richard Sarles

Richard Sarles was appointed General Manager and Chief Executive Officer by the Metro Board of Directors effective January 2011. Sarles has more than 40 years of experience in the transit industry with WMATA, NJ TRANSIT, Amtrak, and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

He was appointed Interim General Manager of Metro in April 2010 and in his short tenure at the helm of the Authority, Sarles has set the agency on a course to improve safety, reliability and financial stability. Under his leadership, Metro has a $5 billion six-year capital improvement program dedicated to improving safety, customer reliability and state-of good repair.

His long career has been spent entirely in public service, inspired by both life and educational experiences. Sarles earned his Masters of Business Administration degree from Rutgers University and a Bachelor of Engineering from The Cooper Union in New York. Mr. Sarles's full bio may be found here.
