Asheville Airport Development Tour

03:00 PM - 05:00 PM Eastern Standard Time

Come out and learn about the latest expansion and development projects at the Asheville Regional Airport. Followed by a social hour at Sierra Nevada

Come join us for the Asheville Airport Development Tour
Followed by a social hour at
Sierra Nevada

Come out and learn about the latest expansion and development projects at the Asheville Regional Airport. Tina Kinsey, Director of Marketing, PR & Air Service Development at the Asheville Regional Airport Authority, will provide some highlights about the Project SOAR, including information about the background and phasing of the project:

  • Project SOAR is a $75 million, 4-phase construction program, with grants from FAA and North Carolina Department of Transportation covering approximately 80% of the cost.
  • As part of this project, Asheville Regional Airport is currently building a new runway and taxiway. The existing runway dates back to 1961 and is nearing the end of its useful life. The configuration of the existing runway does not meet the most current Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requirements for distance between taxiways and runways.
  • The airport is in the process of implementing its master plan. Upon completion of the new airfield, AVL will have land suitable for new aeronautical development made accessible to the runway on the new west-side taxiway.
  • The airport will remain open and operational throughout the duration of the project; the new runway is expected to open in late 2017, with additional construction ongoing into 2018.

The Airport tour will take place on Thursday, June 15th at 3 PM. Participants are asked to park in long-term parking (address:61 Terminal Drive in Fletcher), and bring their parking tickets inside for validation. Once inside the terminal, please meet in the board room, located on the second floor of the airport building, accessible via the elevator near the ticket counters. A map of the parking areas is available at http://flyavl.com/passenger-services/parking-transportation/parking-information/

Tour registration is free. AICP CM credits have been applied for and a PDH certificate will be provided to attendees upon request. We have spaces for up to 30 people on the tour. Please RSVP by Monday, June 12, 2017 if you are interested.

After the Airport Development Tour, interested participants are invited to come out to Sierra Nevada Brewery for a social hour at 5 PM. Drinks on your own. Location of the Brewery is at 100 Sierra Nevada Way, Mills River, NC 28732.
