Description

A panel of experts (Virginia Tech Urban Planning alumni) in Complete Streets planning and design will share their insights in city planning and bicycle and pedestrian facilities. The panel discussion will be followed by an 4-mile bike tour and a lunch/social at Mason Social (not included in the event fee). The panel speakers are:

  • Ralph Buehler, Associate Professor, Virginia Tech
  • Shana Johnson, AICP, Vice President of Service Delivery and Project Manager, Foursquare ITP
  • Darren Buck, Pedestrian and Bicycle Program Coordinator, FHWA
  • Yon Lambert, AICP, Director of Department of Transportation & Environmental Services, City of Alexandria
  • Nathan George, AICP, Bicycle and Pedestrian Team Leader, RK&K
  • Paul Stoddard, AICP, Planning Director, City of Falls Church

The Alexandria Complete Streets bike tour will provide participants with an overview of Complete Streets through an organized cycling tour. The tour will guide participants through a route specially selected for a demonstration of Complete Streets elements. Concepts for exploration in the tour will include bicycle infrastructure such as shared streets, sharrows, trails, and bike lanes. Pedestrian infrastructure concepts will include separated sidewalks, shared-use paths, streetscape and integration of green infrastructure. Q&A stops along the tour will provide an opportunity to consolidate lessons from the cycling experience.

This event has been approved for Continuing Maintenance (CM) credit for AICP members; 1 CM for the panel and 2 CM for the bike tour. Thanks to APA-Virginia, our co-organizer for this event!
