Guest speaker LaVerne Francis Reid

LaVerne_newJoin us for a conversation with LaVerne Francis Reid - contributing author of Boots on the Ground, Flats in the Board Room - as she shares her story of being one of the first female African-American air traffic controllers and her rich career journey since.

LaVerne Francis Reid, a Texas native, began her transformational federal service career with the FAA in Anchorage, Alaska, where she served as an Air Traffic Controller, Realty Specialist/Staff Appraiser. She retired as the FAA New England Airports Division Manager, directing safety, environmental, planning, and capital improvement for airports in the six states in New England.

LaVerne served on the WTS Foundation and WTS Advisory Council where she actively participated in developing the WTS/DOT Memorandum Agreement. She subsequently served as the Chair of the first Transportation YOU Seminar.

Other volunteer experiences and services span local, state, and national areas, including:

  • Presidential 3-year appointment to the National Advisory Council-United States Small Business Administration and was directly involved in establishing the Micro Loan Program that expanded small business opportunities, primarily to women small business
  • Gubernatorial 5-year appointment to the Alaska Real Estate Commission
  • Elected President of the 100,000-member Business and Professional Women/USA in 1989

LaVerne retired and now lives in Austin, Texas with her husband. She actively engages in a local service organization that mentors teen women in life skills and career options, particularly at the Success High School in Round Rock, TX.
