Diversity leads to thinking without limits at AECOM

AECOM1

We believe our different backgrounds and experiences spark innovation and allow us to bring the best of AECOM to our clients and to our communities.

Inclusion and diversity are embedded in our core values and are key drivers to our success. When we draw from our wealth of different backgrounds and experiences, we not only create opportunities for all staff to reach their potential, we enhance our understanding of our clients and strengthen our ability to make lasting positive impacts in the neighborhoods where we live and work. In the transportation industry, we rely on WTS for networking and career growth opportunities that fuel on-going success.

From the organization’s early beginnings, women and men at AECOM have been involved in WTS ─ as founding members of local chapters, as board and committee members, as mentors and as enthusiastic participants in WTS events. In recent years, AECOM became a Trailblazer Sponsor.  As our involvement in WTS grew, we needed to ensure we were realizing the many benefits WTS had to offer.  We formed a WTS Coordinating Council that is chaired by Noreen Nolan, a Senior Project Manager in Philadelphia. The council’s six committees are focused on driving membership, increasing engagement in local WTS chapters and accessing professional development opportunities for our members.  We also issue a regular newsletter called Inside WTS and maintain an on-line Chatter group for sharing instant updates and coordinating WTS initiatives.

We’re strong supporters of WTS and have seen firsthand the many positive impacts it’s had on professional growth for women at all stages of their career. We not only want to make a financial contribution, we want to increase exposure for our female leaders and help shape the future of WTS.

Matt Cummings

Americas Transportation Business Line Leader

Our commitment to WTS and diversity in our organization is further reflected in a number of recent individual member and firm awards including recognition as Employer of the Year by the Philadelphia Chapter in 2016, the Greater New Orleans Chapter in 2017 and the Metropolitan Phoenix Chapter in 2018.  Beyond awards, our staff has also been the recipients of notable scholarships in support of their on-going professional development. Ellie Volosin, an engineer in Phoenix, received the 2018 Diane Woodend Jones WTS Chair Scholarship, enabling her to join the nation’s top graduate students at the Eno Future Leaders Development Conference. Dayna Wasley, a transportation planner, was the recipient of the 2018 Sharon D. Banks Scholarship, an award that will support her pursuit of a Master’s degree.

We’re also honored to have Carolyn Flowers, our Americas Transit Lead serving on the 2018-2020 WTS International Board.  When asked about her role on the board, Carolyn said:

Being a WTS Board member gives me the opportunity to give back and support women at every stage of their career. I'm passionate about making a difference for women in transportation and I'm committed to helping them advance with guidance, mentoring and effective professional development programs. Aside from my experience, I intend to draw on my long-standing industry relationships to better support WTS members and advance their objectives.

WTS has identified collaboration with other transportation industry organizations such as APTA, TRB, ARPTA, COMTO and ASSHTO among their strategic priorities.  In 2017, Carolyn was already supporting this mission when she joined AECOM’s Cathy Benjamin-Ostrander (WTS Toronto Chapter Vice-President) and other women who are leading the way in transit at the Canadian Urban Transit Association’s (CUTA) Annual Conference where, in partnership with WTS Toronto, CUTA presented a session called Women in Transit Operations. We’re proud to support partnerships like these to highlight the important role women play in transportation and demonstrate the tremendous impact organizations like WTS have on our industry.

At AECOM, we believe diversity expresses itself in many ways. See and hear women of diverse ages, backgrounds and careers express how WTS has impacted them and their professional development in this AECOM video.
