Celebrating Women in Transportation – Land, Air, and Sea

09:00 AM - 03:00 PM Central Standard Time

To fulfill its mission of advancing both the transportation industry and the professional women who are a growing part of it, the Virginia Tech Chapter of WTS has joined with the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) to co-host their second bi-annual event 2018 Women's Month: Celebrating Women in Transportation – Land, Air, and Sea.

Itinerary and more information can be found here

The Women’s Transportation Seminar (WTS) International was founded in 1977 by a group of pioneering women in transportation who saw a need to provide women with opportunities for professional development, encouragement, and recognition to support their advancement in transportation professions. In 2015, the Virginia Tech Student Chapter of WTS was founded, mentored by research faculty at the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute to support our new generation of women in transportation professions. To celebrate this new chapter, a group of transportation leaders gathered at Virginia Tech with students in 2016 for our first bi-annual mentoring event.

During Women’s History Month, the USDOT has a tradition of celebrating the increasing number of women who are making a critical impact in the safe and efficient movement of people and goods in America and throughout the world. The USDOT pays homage to these innovators – past, present, and future. Since the founding of the United States, women have played an integral role in the development and advancement of transportation. From wagons and horse carts to bicycles, automobiles, trucks, trains, ships, airplanes, and space shuttles, women have served as inventors, pilots, engineers, drivers, administrative professionals, conductors, and executives, as well as a host of other vital occupations. The unfortunate reality, however, is that we still have a long way to go before every girl aspiring to a career in transportation can easily access that opportunity. So the USDOT continues to promote women’s involvement in transportation through programs like Women and Girls in Transportation Initiative, an internship program that enables female students from colleges and universities across the country to learn more about the exciting careers that the transportation sector has to offer, and Transportation YOU, a partnership program we offer in conjunction with WTS International that gives young women between 13 and 18 the opportunity to explore careers.
