Lunch&Learn

WTS San Diego County started the Lunch&Learn (L&L) lecture series two years ago to offer both public sector employees and students with opportunities to learn about best practices in the field and to provide WTS San Diego County's Diamond and Platinum level Corporate Sponsors with opportunities to present on their areas of expertise.

November 9, 2016

WTS San Diego successfully delivered our third and final 2016 Lunch & Learn (L&L) program to our agency and student members! The L&L lecture series was started three years ago to offer both public sector employees and students with opportunities to learn about best practices in the field and to provide WTS San Diego's Diamond and Platinum level Corporate Sponsors with opportunities to present on their areas of expertise. This L&L included presentations from Mid-Coast Transit Constructors (MCTC), Kleinfelder, and WSP|Parsons Brinckerhoff.

Brandi Lisle with MCTC discussed the importance of Quality Control from a contractor's perspective. This program specifically highlighted Quality Control on a project utilizing the Construction Manager/General Contractor (CM/GC) delivery method such as the Mid-Coast Corridor project.

Lisa Bridge and Karibia Balargin with Kleinfelder provided the group a review of the challenges and lessons learned on two airport projects in the San Diego region - the San Diego International Airport's new Rental Car Center and the new cross-border pedestrian bridge at the San Ysidro Port of Entry. They provided the group with lessons learned and key takeaways from these projects that can be applied to future airport mobility projects.

Our final presentation by Lauren Isaac with WSP|Parsons Brinckerhoff offered an exciting look into our driverless future with autonomous vehicles. Starting with an overview of the timeline and benefits of driverless vehicles, Lauren concluded her presentation with a discussion of the government's role in the development, implementation, and regulation of this fast approaching technology.

May 4, 2016

The first L&L of 2016 was a great success. It was held in the 7th Floor Board Room at SANDAG and had over 40 people in attendance! For this L&L, we had both TYLin International and Kimley-Horn present.

SANDAG_Idaho_Ave_POC_Presentation_Page_01   TYLin International provided us a fascinating review of the California Incline - Idaho Trail Pedestrian Overcrossing Project that is currently in construction in Santa Monica. This project has complex and unique geometry. The L&L was a great opportunity for attendees to learn about the 3D modeling and structural design methods used to develop the bridge design and produce the contract documents.

2016_May_Lunch_and_Learn_-_Innovations_in_Active_Transportation_slide1   Kimley-Horn provided an informative and lively presentation on Complete Streets with existing implemented examples. This was also a wonderful opportunity for the attendees to learn about a holistic approach to designing the public right-of-way for more than just vehicles in order to encourage community livability.

A big thank you goes out to all that participated in and attended the May L&L!  We look forward to another great event in late summer.
