On February 17, WTS kicked off its series of lunch programs with Cara Ferrentino, Transportation Systems Policy Manager for the Office of the Deputy Managing Director for Transportation and Infrastructure. WTS Philadelphia held its Annual Awards Banquet on December 10th at the Crystal Tea Room in the famous Wanamaker Building. More than 400 industry professionals attended the event, which included a ‘Red Carpet’ theme. The Chapter granted $18,000 in scholarships, and special awards in key categories.​

River Reimagined Recap

There were 22 members who signed up to attend the very interesting “River Reimagined: A Land and Water Tour,” presented by the Fairmount Water Works and held on August 6, 2015. The tour began at their Visitors’ Center from where our tour guide, Sandy Sorlien, led us past the Water Works’ beautifully landscaped South Garden on a 1.5 mile walk along the Schuylkill River Trail to the Walnut Street Dock where we boarded a boat for a one-hour narrated cruise.

Infrastructure 911 - How DelDOT Avoided Catastrophe

Barry Benton of DelDOT provided the audience with a complete description and timeline for the emergency repair of the I-495 bridge over the Christina River in Delaware from discovery of the problem to re-opening. Continuing the entertaining streak of programs for the fall program season, Barry had audience members awestruck by the accomplishment, laughing, and almost raising their fists in the air to celebrate the completion the repairs.

2014 Annual Scholarship Fundraiser Success

WTS Philadelphia hosted our annual scholarship fundraiser and first ever DBE Expo on Tuesday, June 10that Ballroom at the Ben. The net proceeds raised from this event directly support the Women’s Transportation Seminar Foundation (WTSF) and enable the chapter to award scholarships to women who are pursuing careers in transportation at the high school, junior college, undergraduate and graduate program levels.

Obama’s Plea for Support

On July 2, 2014, President Obama addressed the nation and spoke about the current state of the nation’s infrastructure as well as the economy. WTS International was received five tickets to attend the event on less than 48 hours’ notice. Jenna Oskowitz, of the Philadelphia chapter, was fortunate enough to receive an invitation from Marcia Ferranto, WTS International CEO and President, to attend the event.

The Future Is So Bright

Recipient of the 2013 WTS Woman of the Year award, Montgomery County Commissioner Leslie Richards provided an informative transportation update. Despite a snowstorm that detrimentally affected the region, a crowd of engineers, planners, marketing and business professionals made their way to the Courtyard Marriott to hear what Leslie had to say. Even Joe Casey was in attendance, prior to being called away due to erupting issues on SEPTA as a result of the heavy and fast-falling snow.

2013-14 TrYOU Program Kickoff

The Transportation YOU Program held our kickoff event for the 2013-2014 Program on September 21st at Burns Engineering in Center City. This year the WTS mentors had the amazing opportunity to spend an afternoon with eleven bright girls between the ages of 13 and 17. During the kickoff, the girls participated in two hands on projects – playing DVRPC’s Dots and Dashes transit planning game and creating a Candy Car out of candy, paper, and pennies.

SEPTA's State of Good Repair

SEPTA’s Deputy General Manager, Jeff Knueppel, PE, gave an optimistic presentation on the SEPTA’s State of Good Repair, despite the economic challenges they face. SEPTA is an integral part of the region’s economy and more than 70 percent of trips made throughout Center City occur by transit. SEPTA ridership is at a 23 year high and has grown by 14 percent in last 6 years, with weekday ridership of 1.2 million trips per day.

Sixteen WTS Members and friends attended a tour of the Philadelphia Regional Port Authority’s many facilities on July 13, 2012. All gathered at the Reading Terminal Market at 12th and Arch Streets at 9:15 a.m. where they were picked up by a very comfortable touring bus from the Port. Women in Transportation History: Lois Cooper

In 1953 Lois Cooper became the first woman to work for the California Department of Transportation (CALTRANS). She began there as an engineering aide, but advanced her career by becoming a Transportation Engineer and Project Manager. She was the first African-American woman hired in the engineering division.

 

Special Tribute: Jack Boorse

Jack Boorse, a long-time supporter of WTS and an avid advocate for public transit, passed away in May 2012, at the age of 78. For those who knew him, he was affable, dedicated, passionate about his work, and a joy to work with. He became a member of WTS Philadelphia, at a time when WTS did not have many male members; he became a member in 1995.

 

Annual Scholarship Fundraiser

The Philadelphia Chapter of the Women’s Transportation Seminar (WTS) will host our annual scholarship fundraiser on Monday, June 11, 2012. The event will take place at the Ballroom at the Ben in Philadelphia. Cocktails begin at 5:30 pm, followed by dinner and the program at 6:30 pm. Newspapers in Education

By: Bob Wright The Delaware Valley Section is one of 15 technical societies in our region, which will be participating in the “Newspapers in Education” program being administered by the Engineers’ Club of Philadelphia (ECP). This effort, part of the Philadelphia Inquirer’s outreach and educational program, provides a 12-16 page newspaper supplement created for students to bring real-world information into the classroom.
