Transportation YOU

NC Triangle's Transportation YOU Program

Transportation YOU is a hands-on, interactive mentoring program that offers girls ages 13-18 an introduction into a wide variety of careers in transportation. Our program is in its 6th year and has over a dozen professional women who volunteer their time as mentors. Throughout the program year, which coincides with a traditional school year, the mentees will explore all aspects of transportation - land, air, sea, rail - with a focus on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

Mission

Transportation YOU's mission is to change the face of the transportation industry by growing the involvement and interest of girls and young women in STEM studies. We work to spark an interest in all modes of transportation and encourage our mentees to take courses in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Benefits of Participating

  • Meet new friends!
  • Learn new things
  • Network with professionals (STEM course suggestions, college application advice, letter of recommendation, etc.)
  • Exposure to scholarship opportunities
  • It's free!

A Look Back

The WTS NC Triangle Chapter held their first Transportation YOU event of the 2017/2018 school year on September 21, 2017 at the Institute for Transportation Research and Education (ITRE) building on NCSU Centennial campus. The chapter hosted a great turnout of middle-school and high-school aged girls to start off the year.

Th chapter was excited to welome Kim Eccles, PE, the Safety Practice Leader from VHB, to lead the group in exploring transportation safety topics. She began by sharing with the group her passion for safety, what she does day to day as a safety engineer, how safety engineers collaborate with other engineering disciplines, and the types of problems they solv. She soon involved the mentees in a discussion about how transportation safety is part of their journey to school every day. The mentees mentioned safety belts, traffic signals, crosswalks, and sidewalks to name a few.

Ms. Eccles and a couple of VHB co-workers then led the mentees in an activity to develop a pedestrian-oriented safety plan. The mentees divided into three groups. Each group was given a map of an area, a crash analysis data sheet, tracing paper to lay their plan on the map, and art supplies to create their safety measures. Each team had to present their work to all attendees at the end of the activity. They explained their evaluation of the data and map used to identify the site-specific problems as well as solutions they developed to improve pedestrian safety. Solutions included new street lighting, crosswalks, traffic/pedestrian signals, and at least one "way out in the future" solution from each team, such as teleporting devices to transport people across the street.

Be sure to check out our next event in the Upcoming Events panel on the left! Hope to see you there!
