Congratulations to our 2017 Local Scholarship Winners

The NC Triangle Chapter recently announced the recipients of its annual scholarship program. The chapter will present the awards to three women pursuing careers in transportation-related fields at its annual scholarship luncheon in February. These recipients will also be submitted to the WTS International organization for consideration of a national scholarship.

Elizabeth Williams – Overly Graduate Scholarship

Ms. Williams is a first-year Ph.D. candidate at North Carolina State University. She is conducting research, under the guidance of Dr. George List, on freight reliability and the use of probe vehicles to improve freeway flow. She currently works as a research assistant at the Institute of Transportation Research and Education, and as a teaching assistant for transportation classes at NC State. Ms. Williams plans to pursue a career as a professor and become a leader and role model in the field of transportation.

Nicole Vlanich – Banks Undergraduate Scholarship

Ms. Vlanich is a fourth-year Civil Engineering student at North Carolina State University. Her focus of study is transportation, and she is involved in the student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the North Carolina Section of the Institute of Transportation Engineers. She currently interns at HNTB Corporation with their traffic group. She also serves as a University Ambassador for NC State, and she spent a summer semester abroad in Florence, Italy. After graduation, she plans to work as a transportation engineer while pursuing a Master’s of Civil Engineering at NC State.

Maile Kawahakui – Molitoris Leadership Undergraduate Scholarship

Ms. Kawahakui is a fourth-year Civil Engineering student at North Carolina State University. Her focus of study is transportation and she is involved in the student chapter of the ITE-ASHE-AREMA. She currently interns at RS&H in their Roadway Design group. Ms. Kawahakui also volunteers through several organizations, including Stop Hunger Now and the Governor Morehead School for the Visually Impaired. She plans to work in the transportation field after graduation and eventually pursue a Masters degree.
