WTS International (WTS) and the Board of Directors have made it a strategic priority to expand across North America. As WTS grows, our leadership has focused on both supporting longstanding chapters and nurturing newer ones.
In October, Maggie Walsh, Chair, WTS Board of Directors, Vice president, HDR, and Paula Hammond, Vice Chair, WTS Board of Directors, Senior Vice President, WSP USA, traveled to North Carolina and South Carolina to do just that.
“It’s important for us to be on the ground to see the work of longstanding chapters in advancing the WTS mission and to support the beginning efforts of new chapters to do the same,” Walsh said.
On October 28, Walsh and Hammond attended the Transportation Trailblazers Panel, jointly hosted by WTS NC Triangle Chapter and WTS Charlotte Metro Chapter. The host chapters strongly believe in the WTS mission and are dedicated to providing professional development programs, career mentorship and enrichment to transportation professionals.
“The NC joint chapter’s event was a great demonstration of mentorship, enthusiasm and the attendees commitment to our WTS goals of advancing women in the industry,” Hammond said.
In addition to Walsh and Hammond, Grace Crunican, former General Manager of the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) served as moderator, Laurie Cullen, Regional Aviation Director, VHB, and Dr. Beverly Scott, CEO, Beverly Scott Associates, LLC spoke on the panel. The panel took place prior to the opening reception for The American Council of Engineering Companies of North Carolina (ACEC NC) Transportation Conference; the largest transportation industry event in North Carolina.
On October 29, 2019, WTS South Carolina Chapter hosted its inaugural event. After several months of planning and recruitment, WTS South Carolina was officially ratified by WTS on September 17, 2019. Walsh and Hammond joined the Chapter to celebrate this tremendous accomplishment. They were honored to share the stage with SCDOT Secretary, Christie Hall and Emily Lawton, Division Administrator, Federal Highway Administration, Dana Hook, CDM Smith and inaugural SC Chapter President Raven Gambrel.
“Hard work, passion, and resilience are key in creating a successful chapter,” Walsh said, “WTS South Carolina has all of those things and I look forward to seeing this chapter flourish with great programming.”
