Transportation YOU

Creating Change in Transportation

Who We Are
Transportation YOU launched in 2010 and is the joint initiative of WTS international and the U.S. Department of Transportation. This is a hands-on program that offers young girls ages 13-18 an introduction to transportation careers. Local chapters coordinate Transportation YOU initiatives. In Phoenix, we are collaborating with partners in the transportation industry and in education to offer programs and activities that connect classroom learning to real world careers.

Mission
Transportation YOU's mission is to shape the future of the transportation industry by growing the involvement and interest of girls and young women in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) studies.

Programs
The current Phoenix Transportation YOU program is under way. It is a two-year program with students from Mesa's Westwood High School. The program utilizes the Gilbert Light Rail Extension as a key transportation project example to inspire and help local school students build a foundation in STEM careers.

Goals
  • Empower young women with opportunities in the transportation industry
  • Provide internships and career development opportunities
  • Help young women build leadership skills and self confidence
  • Make STEM education more accessible through scholarships
  • Contribute to the diversity and creativity of our transportation workforce

Transportation YOU DC Summit
This youth summit is an opportunity for select Transportation YOU participants from across the country and their mentors to gather and experience once-in-a-lifetime tours, meet-ups with White House adminsitrators and participate in cool challeges and breakout sesstions. The conference ends in a spectacular networking reception.

Every annual Transportation YOU DC Summit offers attendees the opportunity to meet college representatives and senior administration officials, including the Secretary of Transportation. Additionally, attendees get to explore the White House or U.S. Capitol, local airports, the DC Metro and other transportation hubs. There also are opportunities to partake in engineering challenges and learn about professional development / career planning programs and core transportation development components such as accessibility and livable communities.
